COVID-19 Update – August 25, 2020

A year ago, who would have imagined we’d be six months into a global pandemic? Our emails stopped because it appeared that Michigan was well on its way to moving to Phase 5 of the MI Safe Start Plan, and we didn’t want to give you one more email to read. Unfortunately, as with most things in life, nothing went as expected. Daily cases started to rise as more businesses opened, and the threat of moving backward was real.

But today there’s reason to be hopeful again. New COVID-19 cases in the US are on a downward trajectory, hitting their lowest level in more than two months. Closer to home, on August 19 Governor Whitmer and Dr. Joneigh Khaldun announced that most MI regions are also registering a decrease in cases per million people. When it comes to testing, Michigan’s averaging 28,000 tests per day with a 3.3% positivity rate. If we can get our positivity rate to less than 3%, Dr. Khaldun said it would show we have infection rates under control.

We know there are businesses still unable to open and some that are working with reduced hours, staff, and capacity. It’s hard. It’s stressful. We need to pull together and do our part so our friends and neighbors can get back to business. EYR is continuing to follow all safety measures (social distancing, sanitizing, PPE, and daily medical checks). We had one scare – with an outside company’s courier testing positive – and our protocols worked; our staff self quarantined and thankfully tested negative.

Governor Whitmer has scheduled a press conference for 1:30 pm today. We’re hopeful the data will continue to show Michigan is moving in the right direction.
