In a press conference yesterday, Governor Whitmer provided an update on Michigan’s coronavirus situation. She acknowledged that officials are watching closely for a surge due to the recent end-of-year holiday season. When asked if the pause will be extended or revised, she responded “I would anticipate some more days of data before a determination is made on what the next steps look like.” Also, Governor Whitmer mentioned the mutation of the virus recently reported in the UK and some US states. The variant has not been identified in Michigan, but Dr. Khaldun noted it is “very likely that it’s already here or will be soon.”

On the Vaccine Front

MDHHS announced yesterday that Michigan will move into the next phase of vaccinations on Monday, January 11. This phase includes teachers, first responders, childcare providers, and residents at least 65 years old. Everyone will be notified by their employer about vaccine distribution dates and locations. Appointments are required.

Also a third vaccine, from AstraZeneca, has been authorized for emergency use in the United Kingdom, India, and Mexico. AstroZeneca’s vaccine differs from that of Pfizer and Moderna in that it uses adenovirus-vectored rather than mRNA technology. Basically a modified version of a cold virus, it carries a gene from the coronavirus’ spike protein and “teaches” your body how to respond if you become infected with COVID-19. Although AstraZeneca’s reported average efficacy is only 70% (compared to 95% for Pfizer’s and Moderna’s), the newest vaccine has been shown to be up to 90% effective when dosing is adjusted.
