COVID Update – January 14, 2021

In case you missed it, Governor Whitmer and MDHHS announced yesterday that Michigan saw a less severe peak in cases over the holidays than neighboring states and now has the lowest case rate in the region. Last week our 7-day average for daily cases was 3,136 and this week’s average is down (so far) to 2,306. The 7-day average for daily deaths and hospitalizations are trending down as well. Also, yesterday’s positivity rate dropped to 6.89%. Although it’s still well above the 3% doctors are looking for to show virus containment, it’s the lowest daily positivity rate since October.

Effective Saturday, January 16

With all the good news about improving metrics, MDHHS loosened some restrictions. Starting Saturday, indoor group exercise and indoor non-contact sports can resume, including high school gymnastics, bowling, and diving. Even though contact sports are still restricted, basketball, competitive cheer, and wrestling can begin non-contact practices on Saturday, too. Masks and social distancing must be strictly enforced.

Indoor Dining Coming Soon … At Least That’s the Plan

MDHHS director, Robert Gordon added that the current plan is to reopen restaurants for indoor dining—with capacity limits and a curfew—on February 1. He did note this is a “working plan” and admitted that whether or not the current restriction is lifted depends on what happens with the metrics between now and then. Don’t know about you, but our fingers are crossed!
