Yesterday, the FDA’s Vaccine Advisory Panel heard testimony regarding Pfizer’s cornonavirus vaccine. After debate, the panel recommend the FDA approve emergency authorization use for the first vaccine. Regulators in Great Britain, Canada, and Bahrain have already approved the vaccine for use in their countries. Pfizer plans to start shipping doses immediately. According to Governor Whitmer, Michigan should receive about 84,000 doses from Pfizer. Assuming Moderna’s vaccine receives approval next week, Michigan expects approximately 173,000 doses before the end of the year.
The Governor’s Press Conference
Also yesterday, Governor Whitmer announced the creation of the Protect Michigan Commission, a bipartisan commission to teach Michiganders about the new coronavirus vaccines and to encourage everyone to get vaccinated. The plan is to include a group of at least 50 people from diverse backgrounds on this new commission. If you want to be a member, you can apply online by December 28.
More Good News
Recent metrics for case rates, positivity rates, and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 have all decreased throughout the state. The graph below shows daily cases in Michigan. It clearly shows that Michigan’s second surge could be winding down. With at least one vaccine rolling out, we can finally see a light at the end of this very long tunnel.
