Pfizer’s vaccine is working its way around the country. Michigan hospitals were among the first to receive their doses because Pfizer is located in Kalamazoo, MI. Front line hospital staff began receiving vaccines as early as Monday. And according to latest reports, the US is in discussions with Pfizer for tens of millions more doses throughout 2021. Moderna’s vaccine, which uses the same mRNA science, is expected to receive emergency authorization use from the FDA as early as today.

The Governor’s Press Conference

Governor Whitmer held a press conference on Tuesday where she thanked all Michiganders and business owners who “doubled down on mask wearing, social distancing, and limiting indoor gatherings”.  She also publicly asked the Michigan Legislature to focus on three items—passing a $100 million Michigan COVID relief plan, passing a permanent extension of unemployment benefits, and passing legislation to protect public health—before they adjourn for the holidays.

Dr. Khaldun’s Message

Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive, announced that cases per million per day and positivity rates are both “trending down” for the past seven days. She is cautiously optimistic that Michigan avoided a post-Thanksgiving surge in cases. She also urged Michiganders to start making a plan for how and where they will receive their vaccination. The state also launched its COVID-19 vaccine dashboard. It tracks how many providers are enrolled in the program and where vaccine doses have been distributed.
