With daily new coronavirus cases still rising, it’s easy to understand why so many people are concerned. In fact, over the last 7 to 10 days, we’ve seen record numbers of new daily cases—higher than last spring—and average positivity rates are up to about 5%. Unfortunately, these indicators are moving in the wrong direction.

But it’s not all bad news.

With the increase in daily testing, there are bound to be more positive cases. The good news is that severe cases down and hospitals have been planning for this for months, so they have enough PPE. Plus, doctors and nurses are equipped with better therapeutics and treatment protocols. Another positive is that the mortality rate from coronavirus is drastically down. Last spring, the mortality rate was up at 10%. Since the pandemic started, Michigan’s overall mortality rate is down to 4.3%, and if we look at the current 7-day averages for daily new cases and deaths, the mortality rate has fallen to 1.1%. Even better … as of last Friday, 114,939 people have officially recovered from COVID-19!
