We’re keeping it short and sweet today so everyone has more time to finish up before heading out for what we hope will be a very Happy Thanksgiving; and if you are lucky enough to have Friday off as well, we wish you a relaxing long weekend!
New daily cases are on the rise across the state, with a few notable exceptions. According to an MLive article on Tuesday, west Michigan and the Saginaw-Bay City area both recorded slight drops in new daily cases AND positivity rates. It’s also definitely worth mentioning that 152,267 Michiganders, 7,641,913 people in the US, and 41,740,070 people across the world have recovered from coronavirus. Worldwide, that’s a 97% recovery rate!
What’s even more amazing is that—even with the incredible surge in new daily cases in Michigan—our mortality rate is still down at 2.7%. The mortality rate for the entire country is even lower at 2.05%. We’re truly thankful for healthcare professionals right now.
The vaccines are coming!
As predicted, Pfizer has filed for emergency use authorization (EUA) from the FDA. According to Alex Azar, secretary of health and human services, the FDA has scheduled a meeting to review Pfizer’s vaccine on December 10. If the EUA is granted (as expected) Pfizer could start shipping doses within 24 hours. Moderna is expected to file for EUA very soon. PLUS – AstraZeneca and Oxford University announced on Monday that their COVID-19 vaccine is 70% effective, on average, and up 90% effective in one of the dosing schemes trialed. Since this vaccine uses different technology than both Pfizer’s and Moderna’s mRNA vaccines, it only requires standard refrigeration, which is welcome news for many developing countries. Both mRNA vaccines require sub-zero freezers during transportation and storage.
