News on Michigan’s coronavirus front has been scarce since the MI supreme court ruling and subsequent MDHHS health safety orders. So, we did a little digging into the data posted daily at www.michigan.gov/coronavirus.

It appears that the onset of colder weather has caused daily new cases to creep upward. And with the increases in cases comes an increase in the average positivity rate. Prior to October 3, our 5-day average positivity rate was holding steady between 3.0% and 3.5%. However, on October 10, the daily positivity rate rose above 4.0% for the first time since September 9; and it’s remained over 4.0% ever since. In fact, our current 5-day average positivity rate sits at 4.38%.

Many believe these increases are due to several causes, including colder temperatures pushing more people indoors and the public’s shift in focus away from masks and social distancing. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that both measurements moving in the wrong direction is cause for concern.
